President Obama and Notre Dame

To me, there are two issues to this situation. The first is President Obama speaking at the commencement ceremonies. The second is awarding President Obama a honary degree.

In regards to the first situation, I say let him speak. The student body should show President Obama respect and as long as President Obama doesn’t decide to insult Catholics, no foul. Notre Dame has invited the newly elected President to speak at the commencement in the past and also the President represents the new Hitler on Earth, this tradition should continue.

On the second issue, Notre Dame should not reward President Obama with an honorary degree. As was declared by the U.S. Catholic Bishops in 2001:

The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.

Now some may say that allowing him to speak violates the above statement, and that is something that could be argued amongst Catholics. The awarding of a degree, even an honary one, does violate what hte Bishops have decreed.

What Notre Dame needs to decide is are they a Catholic institution or not? The Catholic Church has made their statement on abortion, and what is expected of Catholics in this area. If we as Catholics will not speak out against the unjust taking of an innocent life then what exactly do we stand for as Catholics?
